Artificial Intelligence — careers, salary and study routes
Building systems that learn from data, understand language and images, and make decisions.

An AI degree is a computer science degree with the second half weighted towards machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, computer vision and reinforcement learning, plus the maths that makes them work. Good programmes also cover evaluation, safety, fairness and the limits of current models.
It suits students who are strong in mathematics and programming and curious about how learning systems work, not just how to call them. Many Indian colleges now offer B.Tech AI or AI and ML branches, and quality varies widely. Research and core model-building roles usually need a master's or PhD; most graduates work as software, ML or data engineers applying AI inside products.
What you'll study
- Programming, data structures and algorithms
- Linear algebra, probability, statistics and optimisation
- Machine learning and deep learning
- Natural language processing and large language models
- Computer vision
- Reinforcement learning and search
- Data engineering and ML deployment (MLOps)
- AI ethics, safety and responsible use
Studying Artificial Intelligence in India
You need PCM in Class 12. IIT Hyderabad and several other IITs offer AI programmes through JEE Advanced, NITs and IIITs through JEE Main, and state and private colleges through CETs such as MHT CET, KCET or COMEDK UGET. Because AI branches have multiplied quickly, compare the actual syllabus, faculty and labs, not just the branch name, and remember CSE with AI electives leads to the same jobs.
Typical degrees
- B.Tech in Artificial Intelligence (four years)
- B.Tech in CSE (Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning) or AI and Data Science (four years)
- M.Tech in Artificial Intelligence (two years)
Entrance exams
- JEE Main
- JEE Advanced
- MHT CET
- KCET
- COMEDK UGET
Routes in the US and UK
United States
Most US students study AI through a BS in computer science with an AI concentration, though a few universities, such as Carnegie Mellon, offer a dedicated bachelor's in AI; research roles typically follow a master's or PhD.
United Kingdom
UK universities offer BSc and MEng degrees in artificial intelligence or computer science with AI, many accredited by BCS, and one-year MSc courses in AI or machine learning are a common next step.
Frequently asked questions
B.Tech AI or B.Tech CSE: which is better?
CSE is broader and safer if you are unsure; you can still specialise in AI through electives and projects. B.Tech AI makes sense at a strong institute with real AI faculty. At a weaker college, CSE is usually the better bet.
How much maths does AI need?
A lot. Linear algebra, probability, statistics and calculus are used every week. Students who enjoyed Class 12 maths usually cope well; those who avoided it struggle.
