Software Engineering — careers, salary and study routes
The discipline of building large, reliable software with teams, not just writing code that runs once.
Check your fit for Software Engineering →What Software Engineering is about
Software engineering treats programming as an engineering discipline: gathering requirements, designing architecture, writing and reviewing code with a team, testing it automatically, deploying it and keeping it running for years. Compared with computer science, there is less theory of computation and more on process, quality, security and maintainability.
In India most future software engineers actually study CSE or IT, and only a few colleges offer a B.Tech named Software Engineering; employers treat them alike. It suits students who like building things for users and working in teams. Entry-level hiring has become more selective as AI coding tools spread, which rewards strong fundamentals and real projects over a degree name.
What you'll study
- Programming, data structures and algorithms
- Object-oriented design and design patterns
- Software requirements, architecture and modelling
- Software testing, verification and quality assurance
- Databases, operating systems and networks
- Web, mobile and cloud application development
- Agile methods, version control and DevOps
- Team capstone project with a real client
Studying Software Engineering in India
You need PCM in Class 12 for a B.Tech. Dedicated software engineering B.Techs, such as at Delhi Technological University, admit through JEE Main; IITs through JEE Advanced for CSE; and state and private colleges through CETs, BITSAT or their own tests. Colleges must be AICTE approved. Non-PCM students can reach the same careers through BCA and MCA.
Typical degrees
- B.Tech in Software Engineering (four years)
- B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering (four years)
- Integrated M.Tech in Software Engineering (five years)
- M.Tech in Software Engineering (two years)
Entrance exams
- JEE Main
- JEE Advanced
- BITSAT
- MHT CET
- KCET
Routes in the US and UK
United States
US options include ABET-accredited BS degrees in software engineering as well as computer science; there is no longer a PE licensing exam for software, so employers judge candidates on skills, internships and interviews.
United Kingdom
UK universities offer BSc, BEng and MEng degrees in software engineering, often with a placement year and accreditation from BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, which leads towards Chartered IT Professional (CITP) or CEng status.
Frequently asked questions
Software engineering vs computer science: which should I pick?
In India, pick the stronger college; CSE is far more widely offered and employers see the two as equivalent for software jobs. Choose computer science if you are drawn to theory, research or AI, and software engineering if you care most about building and shipping products.
Will AI replace software engineers?
AI tools already write routine code, which raises the bar for beginners. Engineers who understand systems, can design, review and test software, and can work with users remain in demand.
