Cybersecurity — careers, salary and study routes
Defending systems, networks and data against attackers, and investigating when things go wrong.
Check your fit for Cybersecurity →What Cybersecurity is about
Cybersecurity professionals find weaknesses before attackers do, monitor networks for intrusions, respond to incidents, investigate breaches, and help organisations manage risk and comply with data-protection law. The work ranges from hands-on penetration testing and malware analysis to security architecture, governance and audit.
It suits curious, persistent students who like understanding how things break and do not mind constant learning, since threats change every month. Banks, IT services firms, government agencies and start-ups all need security staff. Employers value hands-on skill heavily, so capture-the-flag contests, labs and certifications matter alongside the degree, and many people enter security after a few years in networking or development.
What you'll study
- Programming, operating systems and computer networks

Studying Cybersecurity in India
B.Tech routes need PCM and admit through JEE Main, state CETs such as MHT CET and KCET, or university tests; B.Sc routes usually need maths or computer science in Class 12 and admit on marks or CUET-UG. Specialist institutions such as the National Forensic Sciences University offer dedicated programmes. CERT-In is the national agency for cyber incidents, and industry certifications such as CompTIA Security+ or offensive-security credentials are widely recognised by employers.
Typical degrees
- B.Tech in CSE (Cyber Security) (four years)
- B.Sc in Cyber Security or Cyber Forensics (three or four years)
- M.Tech or M.Sc in Cyber Security (two years)
Entrance exams
- JEE Main
- MHT CET
- KCET
- CUET-UG
Routes in the US and UK
United States
US students take a BS in cybersecurity or computer science, some accredited by ABET, and many schools hold the National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity designation; government roles may need security clearance, which generally requires citizenship.
United Kingdom
UK universities offer BSc and MEng degrees in cyber security, and those certified by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) are a useful quality signal; the UK Cyber Security Council now awards professional titles including Chartered Cyber Security Professional.
Frequently asked questions
Should I study cybersecurity directly or do CSE first?
Both work. CSE gives broader fundamentals and keeps options open, and you can specialise through electives, certifications and a master's. A dedicated cybersecurity degree is useful if it is hands-on and taught by people with real security experience.
Is ethical hacking legal?
Yes, when you have written permission from the system's owner. Testing systems without authorisation is a crime under Indian law, so practise only on your own labs, sanctioned platforms and bug-bounty programmes.
