What Botany is about

Botany, or plant biology, studies plants and related organisms such as algae and fungi: their structure, physiology, genetics, classification and ecology. It links directly to food security, medicinal plants, forestry and climate research.

It suits students who enjoy biology, fieldwork and patient observation. Jobs with the title “botanist” are few; graduates more often work in plant-breeding and seed companies, agricultural research, herbal and pharmaceutical quality control, nurseries, conservation and teaching. A master’s, and for research a PhD, is usually needed, and adding plant biotechnology or data skills widens the options.

What you'll study

  • Plant diversity: algae, fungi, bryophytes, gymnosperms and angiosperms
  • Plant anatomy, morphology and taxonomy
  • Plant physiology and biochemistry
  • Genetics, plant breeding and biotechnology
  • Ecology and phytogeography
  • Economic and medicinal botany
  • Plant pathology
  • Herbarium and field techniques

Studying Botany in India

You need PCB in Class 12. Central universities admit through CUET-UG and most other colleges admit on Class 12 marks. An M.Sc is the usual step before research, teaching or specialist posts, and research institutes recruit through fellowships and their own selection processes.

Typical degrees

  • B.Sc / B.Sc (Hons) in Botany (three years, or four with honours under NEP)
  • B.Sc with Botany, Zoology and Chemistry (three years)
  • M.Sc Botany or Plant Sciences (two years)

Entrance exams

  • CUET-UG

Routes in the US and UK

United States

A four-year BS in Plant Biology, Botany or Biology. Research and conservation scientist roles often call for an MS or PhD.

United Kingdom

A three-year BSc in Plant Sciences or Biological Sciences (four with a placement). Research careers build on an MSc or PhD.

Frequently asked questions

Is botany the same as agriculture?

No. Botany is the basic science of plants; agriculture applies it to growing crops and livestock and includes soil science, agronomy and farm economics. B.Sc Agriculture is a separate four-year professional degree.

What can I do after a B.Sc in Botany?

Common paths are an M.Sc and research, teaching, seed and plant-breeding companies, herbal product quality control, nurseries and landscaping, and conservation work with forest departments or NGOs.
