Biomedical Engineering — careers, salary and study routes
Engineering applied to the human body: medical devices, imaging, implants and prosthetics.

Biomedical engineers design and maintain the equipment hospitals depend on, from ECG monitors and ventilators to MRI scanners, and develop implants, prosthetic limbs, drug-delivery systems and diagnostic tests. The degree blends electronics and mechanics with anatomy, physiology and biology.
It suits students who want to work on health without becoming doctors. Be clear-eyed: in India many entry jobs are in service and sales of medical equipment or in quality and regulatory work, while design and research roles often need a master's or PhD. Medical-device start-ups and manufacturing are growing, and the regulated nature of the field rewards careful, documentation-minded people.
What you'll study
- Human anatomy and physiology for engineers
- Biomedical instrumentation and sensors
- Medical imaging: X-ray, CT, MRI and ultrasound
- Biomechanics and rehabilitation engineering
- Biomaterials and tissue engineering
- Biosignal processing and analog and digital electronics
- Medical device design, standards and regulation
- Hospital internships or clinical engineering projects
Studying Biomedical Engineering in India
Most colleges require PCM in Class 12, though a few accept PCB students or PCMB. Admission is through JEE Advanced for IITs that offer the branch, JEE Main for NITs, and state CETs or university tests elsewhere. Medical devices in India are regulated by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation, which shapes much of the industry's work.
Typical degrees
- B.Tech / B.E. in Biomedical Engineering (four years)
- B.Tech in Biomedical and Medical Electronics or Bioengineering (four years)
- M.Tech in Biomedical Engineering (two years)
Entrance exams
- JEE Main
- JEE Advanced
- MHT CET
- KCET
- WBJEE
Routes in the US and UK
United States
A four-year ABET-accredited BS in Biomedical Engineering or Bioengineering is common, and many students use it as a pre-medical route or go on to a master's or PhD; professional licensure is rarely required in industry, where FDA regulation shapes device work.
United Kingdom
UK universities offer BEng and MEng degrees in biomedical engineering, accredited by bodies such as IMechE or the IET, and the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) supports routes into NHS clinical engineering and chartership.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do biomedical engineering with PCB?
A few colleges accept PCB, but most engineering programmes need maths in Class 12. If you took PCB, check each college's eligibility, or look at biotechnology and allied health degrees.
Is biomedical engineering good for jobs in India?
The field is growing but smaller than core branches. Graduates who add strong electronics or coding skills, or a master's, have the most options in device design, imaging and health-tech companies.
