How the pivot tool works

Most 'career change' advice is hand-waved. Ours computes actual adjacencies from a bridge graph we've built between 900 BLS occupation profiles — cross-domain mappings like 'software engineer → product manager' or 'teacher → instructional designer' with real difficulty and feasibility scores per transition.

Each pivot suggestion carries:

  • Difficulty — categorical (low / moderate / high / very-high) based on skill overlap
  • Feasibility score — 0–100 based on the concrete pathway from your current role
  • Typical time — how long the pivot usually takes
  • Skill gap — the top-3 skills you'd need to add
  • 3-year TC estimate — realistic pay trajectory in the new role

Who this is for

  • Early-career professionals — 2–5 years in, wondering if you picked wrong
  • Mid-career pivoters — burnout, plateau, or a genuine change of direction
  • Retraining — deliberate industry-change with time and capital to invest
  • Sabbatical planners — mapping options before a break so you can return sharper

Frequently asked questions

How accurate are the difficulty scores?

Ranges are calibrated from published skill-overlap studies (Frank et al. 2019, Neffke & Henning 2013). Individual difficulty varies with your existing skills and network, so treat the score as directional.

Do you cover pivots into non-tech fields?

Yes — 900+ occupation profiles across every BLS major group, including trades, healthcare, education, and arts.
